CHOOSING CARBS - WHICH TO EAT, WHICH TO AVOID! Carbohydrates are the fuel for everything we do... Whether it is climbing out of bed in the morning, or puffing away on the treadmill after a tough workout, our body uses the sugars derived from the carbs in the foods we eat as the fuel for our activity.. Each gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories, and they are highly effective when consumed of the right variety... There are, of course, both good and bad carbohydrate sources which are used by the body... The more of the good kinds you consume, the greater your body’s productivity and efficiency will be... Consuming more junk results in a situation where your body burns them for fuel, but doesn’t run optimally... The choice is yours! Let’s examine the best and worst kinds of carbohydrates you should be consuming on a weekly basis. The clean carbs are those with the last amount of processing... Think of the foods that grow in the Earth - fruit, vegetables, and potatoes (yams, sweet and red, and white). If it grows in the ground and you can pick it, wash it, and eat it, then it is probably a great carbohydrate source... Even among the foods which must be prepared, there is minimal change made to the products which are on the “good” list... Consider the use of foods like corn tortillas, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread.... Sure, they might not taste as good as some of the other carb sources, but they are pure, clean sources of energy and will make your workouts better than ever. Now, let’s examine the list of foods which should be avoided.. We will call these the delicious carbs! Sources requiring a lot of processing or artificial ingredients and preservatives fall on this list. If it can sit in your cupboard for a year and still taste great, it is probably on this list... Consider carb sources such as french fries, candy, cookies, crackers, fruit snacks, and canned baked beans.. Foods like cereal, while heralded as healthy, are still considered junk carbs due to their ingredients and level of processing... And of course, those energy drinks like Gatorade and Vitamin Water - they are not good sources either, containing plenty of ingredients you cannot spell or pronounce. When you shop, start in the product section and fill your cart... Take it home, toss the junk, and spend a week eating high quality carb sources... You will probably quickly discover how good you feel, look and perform. Give it a shot!
