Evaluating Estrogen

An estrogen test measures the level of the most important estrogen hormones (estradiol, estriol, and estrone) in a blood or urine sample.

  • Estradiol is the most commonly measured type of estrogen for nonpregnant women. The amount of estradiol in a woman's blood varies throughout her menstrual cycle. After menopause, estradiol production drops to a very low but constant level.
  • Estriol levels usually are only measured during pregnancy. Estriol is produced in large amounts by the placenta, the tissue that links the fetus to the mother. It can be detected as early as the 9th week of pregnancy, and its levels increase until delivery. Estriol can also be measured in urine.
  • Estrone may be measured in women who have gone through menopause to determine their estrogen levels. It also may be measured in men or women who might have cancer of the ovaries ,testicles , or adrenal glands.
  • IF YOU ARE A MAN, and you test with high levels of ESTRONE and HCG or AFP, you may have testicle cancer. I believe you should run this test if you have consitently high levels of estrogen or symptoms thereof. A simple pregnancy test form the dollar store can measure your HCG. It should be negative unless our taking it.
  •  A woman’s optimal estrogen range is 90 to 250 pg/mL, while a man’s estrogen levels should stay within 20 to 30 pg/mL. For testosterone, women should be in the range of 1.0 to 2.2 pg/mL, while men should maintain testosterone in the 20 to 25 pg/mL range.

  • If a woman’s levels of estrogen are too low, she may be prescribed bioidentical estrogen to restore it to a more youthful level. Women may also need to receive progesterone supplements to help balance out the estrogen — the progesterone level should be between 2.0 and 6.0 pg/mL.

  •

In men, progesterone can help balance the effects of estrogen just like in women. It is made in the adrenal glands and testicles. Its calming effects help lift the mood and encourage restful sleep. Progesterone tells the body to use fat for energy, promoting healthy weight distribution. It prevents fat storage in the breast area and may protect against prostate enlargement in men. Overall, energy and strength is improved in men who have adequate progesterone levels. AAS like Deca and Tren act as progestins, and cabergolin may be needed for side effects.

Getting all three sex hormones tested can be helpful for both men and women, and the results often offer clues on how to bring more balance to the body’s physiology and prevent unwanted symptoms in the future.
